Set in a steampunk world where clockwork golems combat is more akin to tank battles than duels the Black River Irregulars are a potent group and their involvement in things above their pay grade results in action at its finest. An excellent swords and sorcery (and axes and gas bombs) type trip into a dark and dripping world. Well worth the price.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The pacing was great and the characters continue to be more than just archetypes. I am looking forward to the next book.
I thoroughly enjoyed the change of pace with the combo of sword and sorcery matched with pistols, grenades, and bots! This was a quick read and I would recommend it highly.
Great book if you are a fan of the Iron Kingdoms setting. Looking forward to a sequel.
A very good read, if you liked the characters in Murder in Corvis you will like this one, however I did think that the way they did the build up of the characters was a little slow.
First off - I'm basing my 5 star review on the fact that I'm already sold on the Iron Kingdoms setting.
Having said that, the books itself is very well written, each chapter from a perspective of a different hero/anti-hero and the narration changes slightly depending on the character's world view - which makes reading it really immersive.
For someone who does not know the world well, some details my be unclear but it should be a good read none the less, I very much encourage anyone who likes fantasy/steampunk setting.
Updated - I'd originally given a review based on the first few pages, but now I'm almost done I feel totally immersed and engaged with the steam-punky-and magic city of Corvis and the Black River Irregulars, a small mercenary group of grumpy specialists. I wish they'd print the original short story that introduces the leader Colbie and her gang (Murder In Corvis) though (currently only on , https//www./gp/product/B00RUD1UNQ/)
