Two years ago, OACET Agent Rachel Peng helped a serial murderer escape from police custody. This morning, he appeared in her backyard, wearing the face of a dead friend from her days in the Army. Within minutes of his arrival, Rachel learns that the head of OACET’s wife has been kidnapped . . . along with Rachel’s niece.

Rachel can’t deny that Marshall Wyatt has helped her and the other members of the Office of Adaptive and Complementary Technologies before, but that was on his terms. This time, he says he’s here to do what she can’t—and as OACET’s liaison to the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, the list of what Rachel can’t be caught doing is long. If she wants to rescue her niece, she might have to let Wyatt do what he does best.

But if she does get caught, Rachel and her fellow Agents might lose everything.

Reviews for the Rachel Peng novels

“after spending the length of the novel with her, I'm eager to pick up the next one to see what's next for Rachel Peng” (io9)

“If I have any regrets about Rachel Peng, it's that we're unlikely to ever see her front and center on a multiplex screen, cracking wise before she shoots somebody's kneecaps off. And we should. Rachel Peng is a bad-ass for the digital age.” (New York Times bestselling author, Seanan McGuire)

Brute Force Rachel Peng Book 4 edition by KB Spangler Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

K.B. Spangler has a nice mystery series about OACET Agent Rachel Peng. The agency consists of people who had a quantum-organic computer placed in their brain to connect them top all the computer streams around them. Alas only three hundred and fifty of the five hundred victims survived the first few years. Rachel lost her eyes from staring at the sun, but the chip lets her see emotions, and through walls. The fourth tale Brute Force (paper from A Girl and Her Fed Books) starts with a kidnaping of an agent and her daughter for political reasons. In this exciting tale, Rachel and her friends have to not only locate the victims, but also tread carefully to keep their agency from negative press. I really like the series and hope for new tales soon.Review printed by Philadelphia Weekly Press

Brute Force Rachel Peng Book 4 edition by KB Spangler Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I've been waiting for weeks to get my hands on this, and it definitely delivered. As a long-time reader of the webcomic universe these novels are set in (agirlandherfed.com, if you like these you'll probably enjoy it and it's FREE) some of the suspense gets pulled by knowing which characters are still alive and kicking and which aren't, but there are some lovely nods to the comic readers mixed in to more than make up for it.

If you're new to Spangler's wonderful world of cyborgs and inter-governmental espionage and don't feel like starting with the comic, definitely start with Digital Divide, the first in the series. If you're all caught up, this is a fantastic addition, and comes highly recommended. I devoured it in an evening, and plan to start a closer read tomorrow night.
A child held hostage, a twisty-as-hell plot to compromise the federal cyborgs of OACET, and a familiar psychopath returns... to help save the day. The latest Rachel Peng novel exposes old secrets from Rachel's earlier cases, including how the murderer known as Jonathan Glazer escaped.
Extremists have a scheme to overthrow the government & they plan on the Office of Adaptive and Complementary Technologies playing a key part. Digging into the background of suspicious characters & coping with her new 'partner', Rachel tackles the mess of negotiations & investigation with her inimitable brand of sass & pragmatic violence.
I've read each Rachel Penguin book as soon as it was issued, and they are all solid action-adventure page turners. But one of the amazing attributes that never ceases to amaze me is how each book, while grounded in a complex fictional universe full of more complications that you could describe in a week, continues to provide engaging characters, clever puzzles and non-stop action that doesn't rely on anything except itself.
Brute Force is a fine addition to both the Rachel Penguin series and the greater world of A Girl and Her Fed, and I'm delighted that it will likely lead to even more readers encountering these creations.
Another excellent addition to the Rachel Peng book series, part of the wider story world started by the Girl and Her Fed comic series. Spangler is a master at creating individual books that still tie together into a unique whole between other novels and even formats, as we see with the webcomic. In this edition, Rachel and her comrades at OACET have to figure out how to safely rescue their leader's wife and godchild from a militia with unclear aims, while trying to wade through inter-agency bs from other federal branches. Written during the same time as the Amon Bundy standoff, the book ties in current events and the question of the place of government. Very well written and highly recommend!
Wondering what happens when technology has dramatically overtaken the law and legal precedent? Looking for a well written technical thriller where the people still matter more than the machines? Curious about what happens when you kidnap a ninja? Then this is the book for you.

Brute Force is a fantastic blend of speculative fiction in a world very much like our own, where conspiracy theories start becoming conspiracy facts. Whether it's a cybernetic implant or a better smartphone app, the arms race between law and law enforcement technologies is one that has raged since the constitution was first written. K. B. Spangler is looking a little further down the road, but the same questions faced by the founding fathers are being dealt with by Rachel Peng.

Four books in, and there hasn't been a bad Rachel Peng book. This far in, you'll probably want to read the preceding novels, but I promise you that it's worth it.
I really like Rachael Peng. Therefore, when a murderous pyschopath shows up just beyond her lawn, it gives me stress. When you add that to the kidnapped child being used to control her bosses wife, (also kidnapped) I start to have stomach pains. However, given the fact that there is always humor amidst the high stakes in the these books I must read on.

If you are not up to speed, this series is about a group of people who are the result of a government project merging high tech with human beings resulting in a highly bonded group of people with some unusual abilities. Having survived an attempt to highjack individual free will, they are now justifiably self protective, as various government agencies and megalomaniacs try to control or replicate their abilities. So stealing their children to control the adults may not in the long run turn out to be the best plan.

The Rachael Peng books always deal with wheels within wheels, but the kidnapping of an adored and adorable little girl pushes the timeline and the tension all the way up. If these books weren't really funny, I would have stopped reading. And given the current state of affairs in America, this all somehow seems less far fetched than it used to. Even when some of the people in these books are telepathic and some talk to ghosts.
