I like books from this time period but this just went on and on and on about things that did not forward the plot and many of the characters were unlikable.
Maybe I didn't give it a fair chance but I just couldn't finish it. I read 15% and had enough. It is written in a simple style. I would almost think it was meant for a young reader but the content isn't meant for a young reader. It skips around, doesn't have a good flow to it. I'd like to hear what someone else thinks.
Wonderfully written. Compton MacKenzie was a true writer with extensive and wonderfully descriptive vocabulary. His insight in the psychology of women was superb. His descriptions sometimes humorous. A story about a woman who believed in herself and selected her own path in life very early on. Beautiful story.
I just have to find the late life and adventures of SS. Admittedly, some of her adventures are dated but still good to read.
The copy that I received was a poor re-print of an original product with photocopy markings. Legible, but unexpectedly cheap quality.
